May 8 -ZAMBOANGA CITY (sunstar.com) THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) is conducting geohazard mapping in Zamboanga City.
Vheina Marie Quintana, MGB regional geosciences division officer-in-charge, said they have outsourced 10 geologists from Berkman International Inc. to undertake the project.
Berkman International Inc. provides expertise in the areas of urban and regional planning, sustainable development, governance and management and infrastructure, and facilities planning.
Quintana said the geologists arrived in Zamboanga City Monday and have met them as well as City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Elmeir Jade Apolinario.
She said the geologists have started visiting some of the city’s 98 villages to identify the geohazard problems of each area.
They will come up with a 1:10,000 scale geohazard map on flood and landslide susceptibility to include technical report, recommendations, and remarks on assessed areas, Quintana added.
She said the map can be used as basis for disaster preparedness, urban and rural planning, and protection and preservation of the community.
The map can also be used to educate the residents about the community’s susceptibility to geologic hazards.
